The growing competitiveness in the world, the impact of technology and knowledge-based fields on socio-economic development and people`s welfare increase the importance of education. Especially, it is predicted that the usage of digital technologies in different areas of life will increase. As a result, accelerate science and information-based fields will accelerate. Taking into consideration all these processes, education systems try to adapt either content and standards or teaching methods to meet labor market demand. Mathematics and science play an important role in people`s life nowadays. Therefore, it is needed to assess teaching major fields in science as well as students` knowledge constantly. Both national and international level student assessments help to eliminate existing problems. Additionally, these kinds of assessments lead to improve content and methods of teaching. Azerbaijan participates in several international student assessment studies and TIMSS (Trends in International Maths and Science Study) is one of them. The results of TIMSS 2019 were released in December 2020. It was the second time and 5300 students participated in TIMSS. Our results deserve attention and discussion. Why do our students increase their Math scores (515 points) in comparison with the previous study and get higher than the international average, however they still get lower scores in science? Overall 427 points. Even lower than the previous study? We will try to answer this question in terms of content.
