In the modern age, the correlation of researches carried out in higher education institutions with the needs of society is of particular importance within the context of the global data production and knowledge economy. The university-based researches have the potential to contribute to the strengthening of relations between state and industry, the integration of science and education, as well as the expansion of multi-disciplinary relations and the development of international cooperation. At the same time, the research performance of universities is one of the principal conditions for the formation of an advanced curriculum and constitutes a major component of the research-innovation ecosystem of each country. Additionally, mentioned activity establishes convenient conditions for the increase of human capital and economic growth. While the impact of academic research on long-term and sustainable economic growth is widely acknowledged, it still contains considerable challenges in measuring this correlation. This study examines the role of research activities fulfilled by universities in the economic development of the country and society.
